RailCampus OWL

Anyone looking at Germany’s climate balance cannot ignore the topic of rail transport:
Only if significantly more people and goods travel by rail can future growth become CO₂-neutral. In order for rail transport to fully exploit its potential, innovative technologies are required. This is exactly what the RailCampus OWL is about. Universities, manufacturers, Deutsche Bahn, and public authorities are jointly creating a unique ecosystem for intelligent and efficient rail technology at the Minden location.

What Makes the Network Special?

RailCampus OWL brings together leading experts in rail technology from science, industry, and public administration and will educate specialists and executives for a new technological era in rail transport through new degree programs.

The project initiators are the Bielefeld University, Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences, Paderborn University, and Technische Hochschule Ostwestfalen-Lippe.

From the business sector, Deutsche Bahn together with DB Systemtechnik, as well as the industrial companies HARTING Technology Group and WAGO, are involved. The Minden and the district of Minden-Lübbecke are also among the project partners. Additional network and location partners are gradually joining.

RailCampus OWL enables the combination of competencies in order to:

  • Help shape the mobility of the future
  • Increase innovation dynamics in the railway sector
  • Build a research and transfer network

In doing so, RailCampus OWL makes an important contribution to the development of intelligent rail systems for sustainable and connected mobility of the future and strengthens the sector “Rail Technology and Mobility” as a future-oriented field.

Why Minden as a Location?

The synergies between universities, industry, and Deutsche Bahn are intended to help implement products and ideas for the digitalization of railway operations more quickly and effectively. The largest site of DB Systemtechnik, Europe’s leading competence center for rail transport and vehicle technology, is located in Minden.

For this and other locations, the railway sector requires highly qualified personnel. The goal is to educate engineers at RailCampus OWL in cooperation with the participating universities. At the same time, employees within the railway sector are provided with development and continuing education opportunities.

DB Systemtechnik provides parts of its premises and buildings on Pionierstraße in Minden for RailCampus OWL. The company has participated in the establishment and potential studies of RailCampus OWL. Employees of DB actively support the project on site.

RailCampus OWL connects science, industry, and the public sector in Minden to form an innovation network for rail technology. The aim is to make rail transport more efficient and sustainable through digital and intelligent solutions and thereby contribute to climate-neutral mobility of the future.

At the same time, RailCampus OWL strengthens the education and further training of skilled professionals and actively promotes research and innovation in the railway sector. As a result, Minden is becoming an important location for the further development of rail technology.
